This February broke snowfall records in Vancouver

It’s official — that last dusting of snow makes this February the fourth-snowiest February since 1937. It’s Vancouver’s 26th snowiest month since then.

It did snow a lot, but not as much as you probably thought.

For Vancouverites, February is almost synonymous with “the end of winter.” While it might be true for the past few years, we definitely have something fresh for 2017. According to the historical climate data released by Environment Canada, from February 2 to 8, there were 35.2 centimetres of snow falling on the ground at YVR airport. The monthly total was 36.6 centimetres While everyone thought the winter was over, the comeback of snowfall on the last two days of February tells everyone winter is here to stay.

Now that February is over, the record has been carved into the stone.

You’ve probably heard this from your peers a lot — “this does not look like February’s Vancouver.” You’d be right. It’s the snowiest February since 1990, which makes it the whitest winter ever for many UBC students.

Will there be more snow on the way? It’s becoming less likely as spring gets in the way, but nobody knows. One thing is for certain — it’s extremely unlikely that we’d see something like the first week of February again in March. For commuter students, it means that they would have one less thing to worry about. For people who live on campus, they’d be able to eat out anywhere they want to.

Stay warm, UBC. May spring be soon upon us.
