At UBC, it seems as though the dust will never fully settle until the truth comes.
Open letters are continually bring released asking for more transparency in regards to the Board of Governors. However, it is difficult to say the impact that these will make.
The UBC Faculty Association has asked, in an open letter, that the non-disclosure agreements that the Board has cited as the reason for their silence, be renegotiated.
"Given the events that have transpired since Professor Gupta’s resignation, and the incessant stream of rumour and innuendo that continues to swirl around the University, we do not believe that the maintenance of a mutually agreed to non-disclosure agreement around Professor Gupta’s resignation is in the best interests of the University, of Professor Gupta, or of the public," read the letter.
After John Montalbano stepped down from his position until after the investigation into a possible breach of academic freedoms, The Ubyssey tried to get in touch with the Faculty Association (FA) or a Board member -- preferably Montalbano.
We were told that they weren't doing media. At least, not for some time.
The side-scandal that has drawn the most attention is allegations of a breach of academic freedoms by the chair of the Board of Governors, John Montalbano, which is the reason for his temporary resignation.
The "Fact-Finding" process is underway now, being conducted by the Honourable Lynn Smith, who served as Dean of the UBC Law faculty from 1991 - 1997.
When we tried to get in touch with Smith through UBC Public Affairs, The Ubyssey was simply told by Susan Danard, UBC's Director of Public Affairs, that she did not have her contact information.
We later found an email address for Lynn Smith in the UBC directory - but have yet to receive a reply.
