Some parking spots of car-sharing companies removed from campus

A number of Car2Go and Evo parking spots in Hawthorne Place are soon going to be removed.

This result was decided upon after a survey conducted by the University Neighbourhood Association (UNA) revealed that many of the area’s residents disliked the large build-up of car share parking spots around neighbourhood blocks.

“There were too many of these shared car spaces, and so the spaces were reduced to comply or meet residents' needs,” said UNA board chair Richard Alexander.

It is also suspected that the car share parking spots in Hawthorne Place were used mainly by students and not residents of the area.

"The allocation of car share is always a function of population growth and population need, so after reviewing the situation, the UNA deduced that there were too many spots in the Hawthorne neighbourhood and therefore we reduced them," said Alexander.

“During the day there's a very large build up of certain kinds of cars in those areas in front of people’s houses, and that can sometimes obstruct the parking of the residents who live there,” added AMS VP External Kathleen Simpson. “I think the concern was that those parking spots had been taken up by Car2Go users who are students and not residents.”

To make up for these missing spots, new ones will be added into the B4 and C2 parkades near Hawthorne Place. Both of these new locations are located within a 250-metre radius from anywhere in the Hawthorne area.

There will be no changes for Modo and Zipcar parking spots.
