UBC sexual assault suspect in hospital

A suspect from a UBC sexual assault case in May went into medical distress while in the custody of BC Sheriff Services early yesterday. The suspect and his co-accused were supposed to appear in court later that day.

Global News reported that they received a public letter from the primary suspect. In the letter, he is said to mention self-harm.

“I don’t think about hurting people and do my best to protect those around me…the only thing I want is to restore peace and comfort,” said the letter.

“I hope you will be able to get through this and continue your life with love and success.”

Sources have told Global News that the suspect is now on a ventilator and unable to breathe on his own. Their broadcast last night says that this appears to have happened as a result of something the suspect ingested.

Further details about the identity of the suspect and the surrounding details are not being released out of consideration for both the suspect and the three victims of the sexual assault.

BC Corrections and BC Sheriff Services will be reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The suspect and his co-accused’s June 28 appearance has been adjourned to August 17, 2016.
