Yuan Zhi Gao, co-accused for campus break-in, posts bail

One of two males arrested on Saturday at the UBC campus – Yuan Zhi Gao, aged 23 – has been released on bail as of this morning after posting a $50,000 bond. David Singh Tucker, the co-accused in the case who faces more serious charges, was not granted bail.

Gao’s bail comes with several conditions – he is banned from the UBC campus and Endowment Grounds and he must not make contact with Tucker or with the victims of the April 30 offence. His charges have been updated by the Crown to include breaking and entering with intention to commit sexual assault. Previously, his charges were limited to breaking and entering.

According to CBC News, Gao intends to plead not guilty to his charges.

Tucker has had no charges added to his case and was not granted bail in his hearing this morning.

Both of the accused will make their next appearance in court on May 18. Gao will have an arraignment hearing, where he will have to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Tucker’s appearance will be his next bail hearing.
