The student-proposed referendum asking the AMS to endorse a two-day student strike from March 24–25 to demand UBC divest from companies students say are complicit in Palestinian human rights violations passed.
The referendum passed with 7,917 people — 76 per cent— voting in favour. As per AMS bylaws, referendums require 8 per cent of active AMS members to support the vote in order to pass. There was a total turnout of 11,365, which is 18.9 per cent of the electoral body.
In a statement on Instagram, referendum organizers Palestine Strike Action UBC wrote "This historic vote marks a significant victory for student activism and the global movement for justice and accountability."
"The vote signals a powerful call for the university to divest from corporations and institutions profiting from or contributing to the oppression of Palestinians."
