Police respond to attempted theft on Main Mall

Police detained a man on campus this afternoon after an attempted theft.

An RCMP officer said a call came in regarding the "theft of a laptop" at 1:24 p.m.

At 2 p.m., two RCMP police cars were parked on the northeast side of the Henry Angus Building as officers spoke with a man in a black hoodie sitting next to a pile of technology, clothes, a crowbar and other items.

When asked why RCMP officers arrived with two squad cars to handle the situation, the officer suggested that their response was based on the call they received.

“It depends on what we get told — varies from call to call to call. If we get a call for someone, say, stealing and it’s in progress, then yeah, we’re gonna come.”

The officer was unable to provide further information “because [the alleged thief] hasn't been charged."

“There's no danger to anyone … no person was hurt," they said.

A student who arrived after the arrest allegedly had her belongings stolen from a locker in the Henry Angus Building, and had been referred by Campus Security to the front of the building. She said her belongings were in the pile.
