In case you missed it, William Chen, who is running for Senate in the upcoming AMS elections, posted this video of a pirate discussing outrageous textbook prices. It was pretty funny, and also introduced one of Chen’s biggest platforms.
More recently, Chen published another quick-witted satire piece on his Reddit page. This time, a couple tells voters that textbooks were so expensive to buy for their daughter — a “new student” at UBC — that she was forced to live in a cardboard box.

Similar to Chen’s last video, comments both good and bad have popped up following the post a few hours ago.
“I appreciate the concern you have for real issues, but the question still exists: how do you plan on achieving any of these goals? Through what channels can we expect this to happen? Is it even feasible? If you are elected, who will you contact and what will you do to ensure this happens?” wrote Reddit user Jontolo.
However, Chen proves he’s not just all fun and games, and replied within an hour, highlighting his four-step plan extensively on Reddit.
Perhaps Chen’s next satire video will feature textbook companies shovelling our money into an ocean full of student tears. But when will the shirtless pirate come back?
