Vancouver Police are searching for missing creative writing student

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is looking for a missing UBC creative writing student.

According to a VPD press release posted yesterday, 35-year-old Alan “AJ” Birtwistle was last seen near International Village downtown around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13.

“He was last seen walking on Carrall Street towards East Hastings, but has not returned home or been seen since. His absence is out of character and police are concerned for his safety,” the release said.

Birtwistle is white and six feet tall, and has shoulder-length curly-brown hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing a beige and tan jacket, olive green pants, brown leather boots, a grey cross-body satchel and a blue Sonic the Hedgehog backpack, according to the VPD.

In screenshots obtained by The Ubyssey, one of Birtwistle’s classmates shared a VPD Facebook post in the Creative Writing Bachelor of Fine Arts Facebook group, asking people to keep an eye out for their classmate.

The VPD asked anyone who sees Birtwistle to call 9.1.1 and stay with him until first responders arrive.
