The Ubyssey is hiring a second news editor for a term ending April 2026.
The news editor is responsible for pitching, editing and writing articles on issues that affect students and the UBC campus with a co-editor. The ideal candidate is a UBC student who is passionate about journalism, is able to make deadlines and is interested in teaching and learning from others. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and are are due April 25 at 8 p.m. PST.
News Editor
May–August 2025: Casual work on a $150/month stipend.
September 2025–April 2026: Full time (33 hours/week) at $17.85/hour.
Location: Vancouver, BC (UBC), option for remote work over the summer.
Duration: May 2025 – April 2026.
Duties
- Create engaging daily content about campus issues.
- Write complex or breaking stories.
- Edit and publish multiple stories per week, alongside another news editor.
- Write two pitchlists a week.
- Lay out news pages using InDesign for the biweekly print issue.
- Attend and live tweet AMS Council, Senate and Board of Governors meetings on Bluesky, and write or edit meeting recaps.
- Coach volunteers through stories by helping find sources, teaching interview skills, editing, providing feedback, support and advice and educating new journalists on ethics and style.
- Edit stories for content, grammar, spelling and style. Assist with copyediting.
- Assist editors in production by proofreading and working with the visuals editor to finish content.
- Be present at The Ubyssey’s office between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and until the end of production. Editors are excused from work to attend classes and cover stories.
- Help foster a welcoming environment centering journalism for UBC students and attend weekly editorial and staff meetings.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in one UBC class for the 2025/26 academic year.
- Knowledge of people, stories and issues on UBC’s Vancouver campus.
- Strong journalistic writing, reporting and pitching skills. Editing skills preferred, but not required.
- Good grasp and understanding of UBC governance.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Working knowledge of libel and defamation as they relate to journalism.
- Ability to communicate and work well with others.
