Dr. Gail Murphy reappointed vice-president research and innovation

Dr. Gail Murphy has been reappointed as vice-president, research and innovation.

UBC announced Murphy’s reappointment in a broadcast sent to students yesterday. Murphy will begin her second five-year term on August 14, 2022.

The vice-president research and innovation reports to the president, and is intended to lead development, administration and promotion of research at UBC, and advocate for the university’s research.

Murphy is a computer science professor. She was formerly the associate dean of research and graduate studies in the faculty of science, and the associate vice-president research pro tem in 2016. She was appointed to the role of vice-president in June 2017.

The advisory committee that considered Murphy’s reappointment consisted of Board of Governors members, senators, professors, admin and students. President Santa Ono chaired the committee.

In the broadcast, Ono highlighted Murphy’s work in developing a Public Humanities Hub on both campuses, the launch of Innovation UBC and her support of UBC’s research community during the pandemic.

“Dr. Murphy is recognized as a national leader in research and innovation. Her success and commitment to advancing research to advance society will inform her next five years at UBC,” President Santa Ono wrote in the broadcast.
