The RCMP have called the death of a man found on campus today suspicious.
At 12:30 p.m. on April 9, the RCMP found the body of a dead man on the property of the Norman McKenzie House, which is the residence of UBC president Arvind Gupta. The name or age of the man have not been released.
The Norman McKenzie House is located on Northwest Marine Drive, next to the UBC Museum of Anthropology, and occupies a fairly large part of the University Endowment Lands.
Barry Eccleton, Director of Campus Security, said that the RCMP was continuing the investigation to find out the details surrounding the death and directed all questions to them.
"The RCMP are on scene, are investigating it," said Eccleton. "A bit more info will come."
According to RCMP Corporal Brenda Winpenny, a release that describes the details of the death will be available once the investigators determine the cause of death.
"The investigators have deemed the death suspicious in nature and have solicited the assistance of the Lower Mainland Specialized Units to assist with the investigation," said Winpenny in a media release.
President Gupta is currently on a trip to China that is meant to attract more international students to UBC. Winpenny said that the death was not related to the president's family.
