After a shaky game-one loss in the Canada West Finals on Friday night, the Thunderbirds women’s hockey team pulled their game together to win their second straight championship.
With the support of over 4,000 Winter Classic fans, the UBC men’s hockey team extended their win streak to 10 games with an assertive 8–1 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night.
Despite going down early in both games this weekend, the T-Birds found consistency within the dressing room, and it transitioned onto the ice.
Over the weekend the UBC Thunderbirds faced off against the visiting MacEwan Griffins with a chance to climb the standings. Goaltenders Dorrin Luding and Ashton Abel showed out as UBC split two hard-fought games to remain above .500 and tied for fourth in the Canada West.
Over the weekend, UBC men’s hockey headed to Winnipeg to face off against the University of Manitoba Bisons. The T-Birds had immense offensive prowess, scoring 14 goals in the weekend series, and improving to 3–0–1 on the season.
Over the weekend, the UBC Thunderbirds men’s hockey team opened their regular season against the visiting University of Calgary Dinos. After a hard-fought two games, UBC came away with three of four possible points.
Despite a courageous performance from UBC men's hockey team, taking the game to double overtime, the Patriotes knocked them out of the tournament by handing them a 2–1 loss.
After winning 1–0 in the fourth and final game of the weekend series, the T-Birds secured a split weekend series.
This season was nothing short of impressive, and with a first-round bye, the UBC men's hockey team will now set their sights on returning to the conference finals, and reaching their ultimate goal of playing for the University Cup.
With a smile, Butenschön remarked that his team will take 24 hours to celebrate the victory, before turning their full attention to the Canada West finals. UBC will head to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears in two weeks time, with the winner taking home a championship banner.
For Toth, the opportunity has been the cherry on top of an astonishing final season with UBC. He currently leads the Canada West in nearly every goaltending statistic, posting a .930 save percentage and a 1.99 GAA with a record of 10–3–1.
