Last April, one of the goaltenders for the UBC women's hockey team passed away abruptly, only a few days away from her 34th birthday. Over the next few hours, it became apparent that she had been yet another casualty to mental illness.

There are no real or set answers in this field. The groups have largely found things that work and have stuck to them. More confetti, half-time shows, cozy hoodie,s free pancakes, drunk engineers, cheer-leaders, marching bands and shirt tosses.

Their preseason was not the best, but the Thunderbird men’s soccer team opened their Canada West regular season with a satisfactory win against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack (TRU) and a draw against the UBC Okanagan Heat (UBCO).

"We knew they would apply a lot of full court pressure and they're very tenacious and quick with their hands so they create a lot of turnovers — particularly in the first half, which really hurt us,” head coach Deb Huband told UBC Athletics.
