This year’s Persistence of Vision film festival was the UBC Theatre and Film Department’s 28th annual occurrence of this event, showcasing the final short films of students in the UBC Film Production program.
Tucked away off of Main and King Ed, Little Mountain Gallery is unassuming. If it weren’t for the sandwich board proclaiming “Jokes Please! $5! Tonight!”, you’d never have guessed it was there. From the outside, the venue seems to almost blends right into the wall.
“I kind of became the resident rocket scientist, who puts a little extra ‘cosmic’ in the Cosmic Café,” he said. These trivia events are not just about science, but also about current events in Canada and around the world.
Burton joined the VOC 57 years ago in the second year of his engineering program at UBC, but he had been involved in outdoor exploration long before he became a member.
From humorous digs at the stress of student life to corporate marketing tactics to the recent meme-based rivalry between UBC and SFU, memes have become nearly synonymous with internet culture, and can be used and re-used for any purpose under the sun.
With representatives from more than a dozen faith groups, including Christian denominations, Judaism, Islam and Zen Buddhism, each running their own campus communities and events, the UMCA as a whole works to make itself helpful to students.
“The details of how it’s served up may change over time,” said Parker. “But the heart of librarianship is still about making sure that people get what [information] they need with as little trouble as possible.”
