For the members of the UBC tennis sports club, tennis is much more than just a game that they can play with their buddies on the Place Vanier courts after finals. They need to sacrifice their time and energy to play at a much more competitive level.

UBC entered the competition with a second place in NAIA West and played its first game on Friday against the third-seeded College of Idaho Yotes. The 'Birds then conceded a 3-0 to the top-seeded Lewis-Clark State Warriors on Saturday.

After Theresa Hanson’s departure for SFU, the Thunderbirds started a year-long search for a new athletics director. That search has finally come to a conclusion with UBC announcing that Gilles Lepine has been named senior director of UBC Athletics.
Last week, the UBC eSports Club finished off the uLoL Campus series by defeating Robert Morris University in the finals and winning a $180,000 scholarship that came with the title. This victory makes them the best collegiate team in North America.
After splits against the Corban University and Lewis-Clark State College on the road, the Thunderbird baseball team picked up three wins and a loss against the College of Idaho Yotes back at home. UBC now holds a conference record of 19-11.
Laura Taylor, a goaltender for the UBC Women’s Hockey Team, has passed away. Taylor, a 33 year old student at the UBC Faculty of Medicine, joined the Hockey team as part of the Thunderbird’s 2015/2016 recruiting class.
“We did a program evaluation and looked at our pattern of results over the last 12 years and we want to raise the bar with the volleyball program. We needed to make a change to do that,” said Gord Hopper.
The team is back in action this year and mid way through a competitive season in the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. They currently sit sixth in the conference with a 7-16-0 record.
First stop: Walmart. If, like me, you grew up overseas, then you might understand my feelings of sheer amazement, admiration and disgust when I enter a Walmart. But after Walmart, the real adventure begins — Seattle, Portland, Yosemite and Sequoia.
The UBC men's and women's swim teams added 16 new recruits to their rosters. Newcomers Marcus Thormeyer and Emily Overholt are particularly making waves. The teams are losing top swimmers to graduation and the Olympics this year.
The Thunderbirds baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games by sweeping the Simpson University Red Hawks for the second time. On Saturday, the T-Birds won by scores of 6-0 and 10-2. On Sunday, the ’Birds won 5-3 and 9-0.
The Thunderbirds football team will take to the field for the first time since winning the Vanier Cup on August 26. The ’Birds will take of the University of Manitoba in neutral territory, Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC on Vancouver Island.
Professional scouts descended on Thunderbird Stadium on Wednesday as football standouts Quinn van Gylswyk and Terrell Davis worked out for representatives from the Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders, Toronto Argonauts and BC Lions.
