The strike notice comes after 40 days of collective bargaining failed to reach an agreement between BCRTC and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 7000, the union that represents approximately 900 SkyTrain workers in Metro Vancouver.
The statement follows months of activism from student groups including UBCC350, Extinction Rebellion UBC (XR UBC) and the Social Justice Centre.
In June 2018, a draft of UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan was presented to the Board of Governors, intending to replace the university’s 2009 Aboriginal Strategic Plan and implement the TRC's 94 Calls to Action.
While Ilnitchi has kept busy with the 2019 federal election and provincial government advocacy, some of her other campaign promises have yet to hit full stride.
Her platform aimed to tackle some lofty goals, like supporting the Sexual Assault Support Centre in a year where UBC’s sexual misconduct response policy is under review and pushing UBC to divest from fossil fuels.
Hakim campaigned on the platform of improving sexual assault support, affordability, Indigenous inclusion, sustainability and increased student consultation throughout all aspects of his work.
