The website's creators will not be pursuing commercial revenue — they just hope it will serve as a streamlined method of textbook exchange for students to buy and sell. Less than a week after the launch, hundreds of textbooks are up for sale.
182,115 animals were used in 869 research and teaching experiment proposals in 2014. This marks the fifth consecutive year that UBC has published their animal research statistics, being one of only two universities in Canada to do so.
Several UBC professors have been named as members of the Order of Canada. Olav Slaymaker, Wade Davis, Nassif Ghoussoub and Joseph Boyden were recognized by the governor general as having made outstanding contributions to Canada.
15 people, including student, staff and faculty, have reached out to add their own experiences to the complaint. Some of these are alumni who experienced problems with UBC’s process for dealing with sexual assault complaints as far back as the 1990s.
In compliance with the requirements of the Criminal Records Review Act, UBC is required to ensure all of its students and employees who are working with vulnerable populations undergo a criminal record check.
The SASC’s assistant manager noticed the need for these special groups through the recurring themes that emerged during her individual sessions with students — healthy relationships, emotional empowerment and the self-care of activists.
UBC Equity and Inclusion Office worked together with many AMS resource groups to provide an opportunity for students to find out more about the groups and how to get involved. The open house was at the art gallery and resource group space.
The AMS has approved a sexual assault external policy to establish what it believes is necessary to include in the university’s new sexual assault policy. The goal of the policy is to ask UBC to reevaluate the processes and protocols in place.
ISL veterans might not have to say goodbye to the entire program after all. According to ISL’s website, there are two placements available for this summer in Kenya, Mexico and Uganda for psychology and economics students.
Once again, the expected dump of Freedom of Information requests pertaining to former President Gupta's resignation has been delayed — this time without an official end date coming from the university.
“We knew this was a very salient issue that students cared about. As a student society, it was our responsibility to take a stand and say, ‘Yes, we’re not supporting this,’” said Jude Crasta, AMS VP External.
When the requirement was first established, students were mostly monolingual and it made sense to have it. Seeing the influx of bilingual students at UBC, some argue that there should be reconsideration for the rationale behind the requirement.
The funds are contributing to an $80 million renovation of the building’s north wing and centre block. The BC government previously contributed $30.9 million to the renovations of the west and south wings in 2011.
“I just hear so often from students having been passed up by the 99 B-line,” said Kathleen Simpson, external advocacy commission vice-chair. “All of us in the VP External office are just looking forward to a time when that is no longer the case.”
