The first World Cup match ever played in Vancouver did not disappoint. Turkey was returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002 and looking for a win. However, despite maintaining possession for the majority of the contest, Turkey struggled against a punishing Australian defence, ultimately losing 2-0.
