Winter break is just around the corner, so that means trading in essays for wishlists, professors for snowmen and late night study sessions for holiday movie marathons. We asked five varsity athletes five festive questions to celebrate the coming season.
Maijken Meindertsma (MM): men’s rowing
James Biss (JB): men’s rugby
Olivia Buckley (OB): women’s hockey
Mason Greves (MG): men’s volleyball
Emma Spence (ES): women’s swimming
1. If you had an unlimited budget, where would you travel for winter break?
MM: I’d love to explore somewhere in French Polynesia, like Bora Bora or Tahiti.
JB: The Big Apple.
OB: My family and I went to Maui for Christmas in 2012. Would be fun to go back there together!
MG: I would probably go to a beach resort in the Bahamas and rent a yacht that has private chefs.
ES: 100 per cent would go all across the Mediterranean, but spend the most time in Italy and Greece.
2. Thoughts on eggnog?
MM: Eggnog is delicious and goes well with everything all of the time.
JB: Never tried it! Will be on my list.
OB: Would I drink it willingly on its own? Probably not. Would I drink it if it was offered to me with a splash or two of another “beverage”? Then yes.
MG: Only good in eggnog lattes.
ES: I like it in small portions, but whenever I remember it has eggs in it I start to get the ick.
3. What is your favourite holiday tradition?
MM: Getting Christmas pyjamas on Christmas Eve for the next morning.
JB: Christmas dinner with family — Roast turkey, pigs in blankets, yorkshire puddings, gravy… all the works!
OB: We usually host a Christmas Eve party with close family friends and neighbours. Always a lot of fun.
MG: Having a pirate gift exchange with my entire family.
ES: Decorating my grandma’s tree. We put all the ornaments on the table to go from youngest to oldest and pick which ones we hang until they are all gone. Kinda like a draft.
4. On a snow day are you staying warm and cosy inside or going out to play in the snow?
MM: I’m having the most epic snowball fight and building a massive jump for some sledding action.
JB: Bit of both, but love relaxing by the fire and watching the snow fall.
OB: Always got to build a Fairview snowman.
MG: Being from Alberta I always go to Lake Louise and ski on snow days.
ES: For sure going out and playing in the snow as I am from Sasktchewan and love the snow, but for sure I would warm up with hot chocolate after!
5. Favourite holiday song?
MM: “Whatchu kno about me” by GloRilla.
JB: Bit of a rogue one here… “One More Sleep” — Leona Lewis.
OB: Honestly, not a big Christmas music fan. But “Blue Christmas” — Zach Top is pretty good.
MG: “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
ES: “Do they know it’s Christmas?” By Band Aid, specifically the 2004 version.
