PSA: The Syrup Tarp is not the Syrup Trap

Full disclosure: I also write for the Syrup Trap.

Someone has taken the good name of the Canadian humour magazine that took off at UBC and could potentially profit off of it.

On the AMS elections voting site, after you’ve voted for all of the candidates, you’ll notice some Tumblr blogs and other websites mainly dedicated to providing blog-style elections coverage. Most of them are legit. One of them, “The Syrup Tarp,” has written the five mandatory blog posts to qualify for Voter Funded Media money — a pool of money awarded to encourage students to provide their own coverage on the elections — and is presumably banking on the fact that some people will mistake them for the respected, high-calibre satire website, the Syrup Trap.

At the end of the day, if you think The Syrup Tarp is a clever enough ploy to warrant your vote, go for it — as long as you aren’t under the impression that they’re responsible for hard-hitting satire like this.
