Security guard at UBC Okanagan dies from injuries following assault

A security guard at UBC Okanagan has died following an assault on campus over the weekend.

The security guard was assaulted by a male worker in the University Centre building on campus and died due to those injuries, according to an email from UBC Okanagan Principal Lesley Cormack. She was not identified in the email to protect her privacy, Cormack wrote.

According to Kelowna Capital News, the attack happened early Saturday morning. The man was arrested under the Mental Health Act. The case is now being treated as a homicide.

Cormack wrote that UBCO is “devastated” that this happened on its campus.

“I understand that there will be many questions around this incident and we are working very closely with the RCMP and our partners to provide any assistance required in the investigation,” Cormack wrote.

“There will be plenty of opportunity to try to understand the circumstances of this tragedy over the coming weeks but our immediate priority is to support the family and individuals affected.”

Cormack stressed that this was an “isolated incident that did not involve students.”
