Your AMS executives are halfway through their terms.
This year so far has seen executives face success and challenges. The VP academic and university affairs was removed from office and the VP finance has taken a leave of absence. Student groups have also called on the AMS to support advocacy and quorum was not met at the Annual General Meeting.
But during their campaigns, executives promised to improve the student experience on issues from affordability to transportation. The Ubyssey wrote about all five executives' progress on meeting their goals and what still needs to be accomplished through the rest of the academic year.
Here is how each executive has done so far. Click on each executive's name to read their full midterm review.
President: Christian 'CK' Kyle
AMS President Christian ‘CK’ Kyle campaigned to improve the student experience, provide academic support and aid both clubs and student affordability. From focusing on building stronger connections between the AMS and student constituencies to promoting academic support, CK has a lot of plans in motion — but, in an interview with The Ubyssey, he mentioned the successful completion of very few of his goals thus far.
VP administration: Amy Liao
AMS VP Administration Amy Liao ran on a platform promising to better the experiences of clubs and AMS subsidiaries, improve the Nest and work toward the AMS Sustainability Action Plan's 2026 goals. Halfway through her term, Liao has made tangible strides toward her goals, fostering student engagement by organizing multiple drop-in events at the 2024 AMS Clubs Fair and advancing sustainability in part through her Circular Economy campaign. However, some of Liao's plans have gone unfinalized — like opening UBC's Interactive Sustainability Centre — despite long passing their due dates.
VP External: Ayesha Irfan
Ayesha Irfan campaigned for the role of AMS VP external on a platform advocating for international students, housing, transit and gender-based violence prevention. Irfan has made significant progress toward her goals on transit and gender-based violence prevention advocacy and increasing student outreach and engagement. However, some of her other platform goals of advocating for increased student housing and tenancy rights, food security and international student support have not yet been fulfilled.
VP academic and university affairs portfolio
This year's VP academic & university affairs (AUA) midterm review looks a little different, as The Ubyssey were unable to interview the VP AUA due to turnover. Instead, we compiled what the AUA office completed and has yet to do from advocating for student housing, working with the Centre for Accessibility, opposing tuition increases and more.
VP finance portfolio
The VP finance’s midterm review looks a bit different this year, as The Ubyssey were unable to interview the VP due to turnover. Instead, we compiled what the finance office set out to do this year, what they accomplished and what still needs to be done. This includes managing the AMS's budget, overseeing the AMS/GSS Health & Dental plan, processing opt-outs and much more.
