AMS Council approves and appoints new position to Elections Committee

Last night, AMS Council met for a short meeting to pass several code changes related to the AMS Elections Committee and having electronic devices during private in-camera session.

Here’s what you might’ve missed.

Two code changes and one code suspension

Council amended the agenda to remove president’s business and remarks, the executive business and remarks, committee reports and reports from presidents council, Board of Governors and Senate.

AMS President Christian ‘CK’ Kyle said because Council met last week, he wanted “to be respectful of everybody's time” and keep the meeting short.

CK also addressed current issues around students being unable to vote in the current AMS VP academic and university affairs by-election.

“So we're currently on hold, waiting for UBC … It's up to the election committee as to what that means for the election timeline,” said CK.

Council approved a code change to change the Election Committees membership — the change created a new position of events and communications officer and reduced the number of polling officers from three to two.

Council also approved a code suspension to allow Elections Administrator Sansian Tan to recommend a candidate for the events and communications officer directly to Council without a recommendation from the HR Committee. Then Council approved the appointment of Jasmine Lee to the role starting January 27 until March 8.

The Governance Committee presented a motion for a code change around electronic voting during private in-camera sessions. Usually, electronic devices must be closed during in-camera sessions and a vote to allow devices has to be held before Council enters in-camera. However Governance Committee Chair Eshana Bhangu said this code change now gives Council the option to also hold this vote in-camera.

The motion was approved.
