AMS Council approves code changes

AMS Council met for the last time this summer on August 28 to pass several code changes and to hear updates from the executives.

Here’s what you might’ve missed.

By the book

AMS Council discussed three potential changes to the current code.

The first proposed code change was to standardize working hours for associate vice-presidents.

“It is important that expectation [of consistency] and fairness is also set forth of [the] president’s leads,” said Board of Governors representative and Council Committee chair Bhangu.

The second code change proposed that the AMS president always chairs the Agenda Committee.

The third code change stipulates that one person cannot be both elections administrator and speaker of council. According to Bhangu, occupation of both roles is too much responsibility for one individual and can lead to complications with conflicts.

All three motions passed unanimously.

Executive updates

The five AMS executives also presented their respective updates to Council.

Projects in the works to improve governance and accountability, upcoming promotions for orientation events and the successful addition of a Workday resource hub on the AMS’s website were among some of the key updates provided.

In addition, VP Administration Amy Liao said 19 new clubs have been onboarded and that this year’s club executive orientation training was successful in its attendance.

VP External Ayesha Irfan said her office had secured a seat on the Provincial Committee for sexualized violence alongside staff.

She also said her office is getting ready for the provincial elections and that on October 4 party leaders will “come out and speak to students and answer all of your hot burning questions.”

“We're planning to release a full blown schedule from when the election is called, which will be September 21 all the way until October 19, as to what events will be coming on and around campus and what events the AMS will be hosting,” Irfan said.

Students-at-large

AMS President Christian ‘CK’ Kyle brought forth a motion to change the appointing process for students-at-large.

“We want … a better system [than] Council looking at like 200 applicants and just sitting here, not saying any words, and then voting based on [a] name,” said CK.

The proposed new process would have appointed council members of committees discuss the candidates and make recommendations to Council.

“This would allow the committees to meet, go ahead and discuss the merits of the candidates, and then come back with a recommendation or split recommendations,” said CK.

The motion passed unanimously.
