AMS Elections 2025//

A re-election is being held for Vancouver student Senator due to ballot error

Voting is open for the student senator-at-large re-election from May 2-9.

Intended to supersede the results of the original election held from March 7-14, the race will feature all but two of the same candidates who elected to withdraw from the race.

Students registered to vote have been sent electronic ballots through email.

“Although holding the polls in May was not our first choice, it was the better option compared to either leaving students underrepresented or having previously elected students—who might no longer be eligible or interested—to remain in office,” wrote Academic Governance Officer Jessica Iverson in a statement to The Ubyssey.

Administrated by the University Registrar, the election was prompted by “inappropriate text” on the previous ballot, according to an email received by students about the re-election.

“The text “[Removed from Office]*” next to a candidate’s name in the Student Representative At-Large to the Vancouver Senate,” was cited by Iverson as the "inappropriate text" in question.

The text appeared next to candidate Drédyn Fontana's name, who was removed as VP Academic and University Affairs this past year by AMS Council.

Polls are open now until 4 p.m. on Friday May 9th.
