Visuals are the first thing a reader sees when they click on a story link or pick up a print issue. Photojournalists are responsible for working alongside reporters to visually represent stories — this could mean taking headshots for profiles, or attending concerts, sports games, demonstrations and other events. You'll learn how to practice ethical, accurate photojournalism, and contribute to The Ubyssey maintaining a professional visual identity.

Sports Photojournalist Not Accepting Applications

Our Sports Photojournalists will take photographs for games, profiles, and other stories for the Sports section. This includes Thunderbird varsity teams, sport clubs, intramural events, as well as stories featuring student-athletes, coaches, alumni and the broader athletic community. All equipment and editing software is provided by The Ubyssey.

Over the next year, Sports Photojournalists can expect to attend and photograph UBC Thunderbird varsity games for a variety of teams and sports; schedule photoshoots with players, coaches, and alumni to accompany profile pieces; and learn to edit their own photos in Adobe Lightroom.

No prior experience in journalism is required. Ongoing training and training materials will be provided.

Responsibilities

Attending and photographing one to two games each week, working on firm deadlines
Practicing thoughtful journalism to the highest standards of ethics
Developing relationships with sources to inform reporting
Attending weekly meetings
Being professional and responsive to editors, peers, and sources
Staying expertly informed on matters concerning your beat
