We use this statement to define our journalism:

Here’s what it means to us:

The Ubyssey is an independent¹, non-profit², public service³ student press⁴ covering the University of British Columbia community⁵ since 1918⁶.

1. We say we are independent because we are an autonomous organization. We answer to the public, not to the AMS, UBC, or another institution.
2. The Ubyssey is published by The Ubyssey Publication Society, a registered non-profit organization under the Societies Act. All the money we collect goes right back into our journalism.
3. We believe that journalism is a public service, and we centre that idea across all our sections.
4. We are a student press, meaning we are directed and operated by students. While we cover all things UBC, our core readership is the student body, who funds our journalism with an annual fee of around $8.
5. We cover the University of British Columbia community, which defines the scope of what we do. While we may cover things that take place off campus, it is our duty to ask the questions and report the answers that matter to the people at our university.
6. We’ve been doing this since 1918. Our first issue was on October 17, 1918
