In their final regular season home game at War Memorial Gym, the UBC women’s basketball team put on a show as they overcame an 18-point first half deficit to take down the University of Victoria Vikes 83-66 on Friday night.
Kris Young and Zara Huntley led the ‘Birds with two lights out performances. Young notched 14 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, making her one assist shy of a triple double. Huntley was a force at the rim and on the glass, scoring 17 points and hauling in 15 rebounds.
UBC started the game with slightly less energy than Victoria, and the Vikes made them pay. By the end of the first quarter UBC trailed by ten, and seemingly had no answer for Victoria’s sharpshooters. By the end of the half, Victoria was shooting .586 per cent from the field. UBC was only able to muster .333 per cent shooting.
“They were tough out of the gate and came at us really hard. We had a difficult time guarding them for the first 20 minutes,” said UBC head coach Deb Huband. “They were shooting a really high percentage but they were also executing stuff really well and we had to make some adjustments in the second half.”
In the second half, UBC clawed back into the game by dominating on the glass. By the game’s end UBC had pulled in 19 offensive rebounds, and had outscored Victoria 24-5 on second chance points. UBC finished with 45 total rebounds, whereas Victoria had 27, and only 6 offensive boards.
By the end of the third quarter UBC had taken the lead, 57-56. For the first two minutes of the final frame, it didn’t appear that the Vikes would go down easy as they traded baskets back and forth with the ‘Birds.
But with just less than seven minutes left, UBC’s offensive exploded. They went on a 12 point run, sparked by two consecutive three-pointers by freshman Cassandra Knievel. Knvievel finished the game with 5 threes and 17 points. Victoria scored four three-pointers all game.
Victoria was unable to recover from UBC’s offensive outburst, managing only three points in the final seven minutes. UBC moved to 14-3 with the victory, while Victoria dropped to 8-9.
UBC will end their regular season next week with a rematch in Victoria.
