Amateur skate competition looks for talent at UBC

UBC was host to Zumiez’s Best Foot Forward skate competition on Wednesday.

Best Foot Forward is a grassroots amateur skate competition run by Zumiez, a skate clothing company, that stops at 34 cities across North America. The top scoring skater from each city wins an all-expenses paid trip to compete in Joshua Tree, California, where a skatepark is being built in the desert.

"We’ve been all over North America, all over the east coast...looking for the best amateur skateboarders,” said Jesse Neal, Zumiez marketing specialist.

The top three finishers get set up with sponsorships and a West Coast tour with a skate media company, the Berrics. The competition is free to enter and has seen pros like Tom Asta and Ishod Wair win in past years.

“It’s a sick park, it’s got good flow,” said Neal of the UBC skatepark. “Super fun, good vibe. We’re hyped."

UBC is one of two Canadian stops in the 34 stop tour and may be the kickstart the career of the next big pro skater.
