Study: Feed our animals with alternate food sources

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

UBC researchers have found that finding alternative food sources for farm animals will significantly reduce pressure on the world’s dwindling fisheries and make a positive contribution to climate change.

Daniel Pauly, a UBC fisheries researcher, said that 30 million tonnes, or 36 per cent, of the world’s total fishery catch is ground up into fishmeal and oil to feed farm animals every year.

The study said that “many sustainable food campaigns focus on consumers while ignoring the large-scale market impacts.”
