Simon Fraser University joins NCAA

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Simon Fraser University (SFU) has become the first Canadian school to join the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the largest college sports organization in the world.

SFU has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1965, as well as a member of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), according to a SFU press release.

Now that they have been accepted, SFU will undergo a two year “candidacy” period. During the candidacy, the university is allowed to continue competing in the CIS and NAIA.

It is unclear as to whether UBC will join the NCAA. UBC President Stephen Toope announced in April that UBC would not be applying to the association this year, citing that there are unanswered questions and insufficient information. As well, the CIS announced in June that its members are only allowed to play in the NCAA sports that are not offered by the CIS. UBC has one more year during which to decide to whether apply to the NCAA.
