New Point Grill gets mixed reaction
Monday, February 8th, 2010
Lazy Marine Drive residents with empty fridges will have a new place for a quick bite. The new restaurant on campus, the Point Grill, opened last Monday.
Situated at the bottom of Marine Drive Building Four, the restaurant includes a grab-and-go section, a bar and a patio that will be completed in April.
Students agree that the Point Grill has yet to adjust and it might take them time to operate more efficiently. “It’s definitely not something for every day, but [it] beats a walk to the Village” said Adrian Bocker, third-year Science student. He also says he is “giving them the benefit of the doubt, since they just opened” after he went in for dessert and they were sold out.
“The food was not filling enough and our server seemed inexperienced,” said Tommy Siedlaczek, third-year Computer Science student, who tried the calamari at the Point Grill and thought it was “quite small for the price.”
Along with Mahony’s and White Spot, this is one of the few places where students are able to buy alcohol with their meal cards. In addition, Point Grill is one of the few places on campus open late.
Loriann McGowan, the General Manager of residences of UBC Food Services, says that the space has been left open for six years, with the idea of a restaurant for “an older, more refined group.”
Currently, the $1.5 million restaurant can seat up to 107 people, but with the $400,000 patio, it can fit more. She also assured that this money did not come from your pockets and that they do not receive any public money or funding from the university itself.
She describes the atmosphere of Point Grill as “similar to Cactus Club,” and she hopes to work with students in the future to have beer and burger nights or other promotional deals.

There are no beer sales on Thursday on this campus. Just noting.

Bacon cheese burger at the point is amazing, and the waiter that we had was really on the ball.
