Canada Line to see fare increase

Monday, November 16th, 2009

The trip to and from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is about to increase by $2.50, according to a story in The Globe and Mail.

TransLink told the Globe that the first few months of the Canada Line saw cheaper prices due to a promotional decision. The increase in fare was planned five years ago. The price increase will go into effect January 1, and even passholders will have to pay the additional surcharge.

Transit to YVR isn’t the only thing going up. This spring TransLink will increase the price of public transit all over the Lower Mainland, including the price of a book of tickets, monthly fare cards, the SkyTrain and the West Coast Express.

However, TransLink doesn’t foresee this as a problem for business. They said that in the past ten years there have been about four fare increases, and none of them negatively affected the demand for public transit—ridership continues to rise every year.
