The AMS elections have come to a close and the results are in.
5789 students voted in the elections this year, amounting to 11.6 per cent turnout—a 0.6 per cent increase from the 2011 elections.
Matt Parson beat out Ben Cappellacci and Alyssa Koehn for AMS president this year.
Caroline Wong won the VP Administration race against Elaine Kuo.
Kiran Mahal beat out four other candidates, taking the VP Academic and University Affairs position.
Both VP Finance and VP External candidates ran uncontested. Tristan Miller was elected as VP Finance with 3622 votes and Kyle Warwick was elected VP External with 3161 votes.
Elected to the five senate seats were Justin Yang, Kiran Mahal, Katherine Tyson, Montana Hunter and Barnabas Caro.
Incumbent Sumedha Sharma and current VP Administration Mike Silley were elected the Board of Governors student representatives.
Two slates ran in this year’s Student Legal Fund Society race for six seats. The Students for Responsible Leadership slate took five seats, electing Maria Cirstea, Jordan Stewart, Aaron Sihota, Jordan MacLean and Sandy Buchanan. One candidate from the Student Progressive Action Network, Greg Williams, was elected.
Two referendum questions passed, while the other two didn’t reach quorum.
The question regarding a $3.88 reduction in the Student Spaces Fund fee and a $1 UBC Ombuds fee passed. The sale of three pieces of the AMS Art Collection also passed.
The sale of Whistler Lodge and the question regarding entrenchment of the AMS Endowment Fund in the AMS bylaws didn’t reach quorum and therefore didn’t pass.
Voter Funded Media results had both UBC Insiders and AMS Confidential tied, each receiving 36 per cent ($360) of the money allocated to the contest, while Tyler’s Blog won $280.
