It was a cold, rainy Saturday night as music lovers gathered in the warmth of UBC’s Recital Hall for the annual Scholarship Winners Concert: an evening of performances meant to celebrate the talent and achievements of several UBC Music students.

Although over a hundred students in the School of Music have won scholarships this year, Saturday’s concert featured just nine of them. The selection represented all four performance divisions in the School of Music, and all years of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs.

Erika Gundesen kicked off the evening’s performances with a technically challenging piano piece called “Old Coyote’s Saturday Night!” composed by Professor Allen Gordon Bell of the University of Calgary.

Following her performance were two selections from Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte, sung by baritone Aaron Durrand and soprano Leah Alfred. Luke Kim displayed his virtuosity on the cello in a duet with Juan Wang, and Evanna Chiew and Junjun Cai showcased impressive vocal chops in their respective solos. The evening came to a pleasing end with a performance by the Nachschlang Wind Quintet, which included two more scholarship winners.

The Scholarship Winners Concert highlighted the incredible talent and diversity in the School of Music.
