In The Loop is a wry British comedy about international relations and how a few poorly thought-out comments can be spun out by the media with disastrous consequences.
The documentary-style film follows bumbling UK Secretary of State of International Development Simon Foster (Tom Hollander), who makes a remark that ends up embroiled in a debate involving the US over whether or not to start a war in the Middle East.
Along the way, Foster is manipulated at every turn by almost everyone he encounters—most significantly by the prime minister’s communications chief Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi). Toby Wright (Chris Addison), Foster’s aide, does his best to make his boss look good, but ultimately only manages to confuse things more with his own mistakes.
Political satire is a difficult gambit to pull off well in movies these days. The cynicism of our time has devalued humour aimed towards politicians, since mocking the abilities of elected parties is a lot less biting and a lot more obvious to the average film viewer. But In The Loop is a genuinely funny movie about Anglo-American diplomacy, complete with more swearing than blinking, and a world of genuinely fresh-seeming satire about the discussion of military affairs in the Middle East.
If you enjoy great political satire and don’t mind a few thousand curse words, check it out.
In The Loop is extremely funny, and, luckily for you, playing at the Norm Theatre from Wednesday, November 18 until Sunday November 22 at 9:15 pm.
