AMS Shitstorm

My brain hurts.
A lot.
I wish I could say: “headache” or “hangover”, but alas, no. I’ve been looking into the big issues the AMS has had this year and oooh boy… It’s a shitstorm. I can’t figure out what starts where and what is going on half the time. I couldn’t even figure out where to start looking. Throwing in UBC AMS into Google gives you the AMS Website or typing in UBC AMS I (I was aiming for issues) will recommend UBC AMS Impeachment and you get lots of links.
Go to the AMS Site, into their Newsroom. Scroll down a bit, and you start seeing information about the biggest shitstorm of them all. The UN Complaint. Come on, you all have heard about it. Right? Blake and Chu going behind everyone’s back and sending a complaint to the UN Human Rights Council about the tuition increases? If you haven’t The Insider has a post kind of summing up the first half of what happened. In a nutshell: Blake and Chu went behind everyone’s back, sent a complaint to the UN about tuition increases, whole bunch of people got mad and wanted him impeached. There were even Facebook groups—one for it, and another against it. And at the time being, those groups were how I got my information. Which the AMS Council voted on unanimously and then it all gets kind of hazy for me, but he didn’t get impeached. Odd…
Moving on, or backwards actually, there is this whole deal with the Underground Bus Loop, it was supposed to go where they’re currently doing construction work. The strip of road right next to Shoppers and Mahoney’s. And then it didn’t happen. And from what I’ve read, this is kind of where the big troubles start. Blake sent out a press release about it, which was described by others as “scathing”. Then UBC President Toope sent out his own letter, and then AMS debated whether or not they should censure Blake. And they decided no and I’m betting that when the UN thing went down they kicked themselves.
In a nutshell: Blake has acted very stupidly and his stupidity even made it into the Metro newspaper. Well, the second stunt did, I couldn’t find anything on the Bus Loop incident.
See now why my brain hurts? Also, if there’s any AMS drama from the past year I’ve missed, fell free to share.
